So I was browsing around the internet looking for diets that would help me lose enough weight before the summer got here. I wanted something unconventional but still proven to work. I was also worried about loose skin in my stomach area because since I had a baby I can tell that if I actually lost weight the skin there would be loose. So I searched and searched until I read something about water fasting and autophagy. Like most people who first hear about water fasting my first question was “Soo what do you eat during a water diet?” and the harsh answer for a food lover like me was “Just water”!!!
Yes just water. You can only drink water for however many days you decide to do this ‘diet’ (it’s technically fasting).
But I couldn’t understand how someone could only drink water and what was the purpose. Obviously you would lose weight but I was sure that you would gain it all back because that’s what I had always heard what would happen after you did any type of fasting or diet. I was surprised to read on several websites that while you’ll obviously gain back some weight, you’ll more importantly feel a healing sensation from doing this rather than a pig out sensation.
How Does Fasting Heal the Body?
I thought that was really amazing. So what did they mean by healing? Well apparently water fasting when done for extended periods of time consistently, has som amazing benefits which almost seem unbelievable.
Here are some of the benefits of Water Fasting:
- Causes body to literally eat loose skin
- Also causes body to eat old scars (even stretch marks)
- Gives your digestive system a break
- Weight Loss
- Slows Aging
- Clears Mind
I was in disbelief after reading all of these wonderful benefits that came with water fasting. The one thing that intrigued me the most was the fact that it could potentially help with my loose skin and stretch marks on my stomach. I always though that in order to get rid of those things you HAD to get surgery or laser treatment. Y’all I was really ready to shell out the cash that it would take to do so until I found this gem.
I learned that the reason that water fasting works so well is because of something called Autophagy. Fasting in itself will force your body into Autophagy. Autophagy literally means “self-eating”. It’s a way for your body to clean and detox itself.
What does autophagy do to your body exactly?
Just think about what happens when you go to sleep for the night and then wake up. Do you notice anything different? More than likely you are at a lighter weight than before you went to bed. Your stomach may be flatter. You probably look rested and feel rested as well. That’s because your body has had a chance to rest and repair everything. All the food you ate for the day has been digested and you more than likely will go on to eat breakfast. That’s why a lot of people have turned to something called intermittent fasting which is where someone won’t eat for x amount of hours, and then in the small window of their choice eat every thing they plan on eating for the day.
How long do you have to fast for Autphagy?
But here’s the thing Autophagy usually doesn’t usually peak until your between the 12th and 16th hour of fasting. After you’ve made it to the peak it will slowly start to wear off , which is why a lot of experts and doctors recommend that you only do it for 3 days at most.
That of course doesn’t stop people from trying to fast for more days. Take it from Karen Nielsen in this Medium article.
She talks about how she completed a 22 day water fast! Karen also talked about how by the second week she no longer felt hunger pangs. She also lost a whopping 21 pounds!
Can Water Fasting Be Dangerous?
Then there are the countless Youtube videos of people doing water fasting here’s one about a that did a 5 day water fast. they talked about how hard it was and all the research that had to be done beforehand so that they would be comfortable enough to complete the fasting with any hiccups.
I think that is an important part as well, and it really helps to know that what you’re doing has been done by other people but also is safe on your body. A lot of them also talked about how this was going to be used to jump start their actual diet goals.
Does Autophagy Really Help with Loose Skin and Old Scars???
The short answer is yes! Lets all rejoice in fasting joy!! But seriously when your body enters into auotphagy while fasting it does detox the body by getting rid of old cells or rather eating them, and then creating new ones. So all the old skin cells and “debris” that is not needed in your body will be eaten by your own body. This includes old scars, loose skin and even damaged cells, making autophagy the ultimate detox for your body. So autophagy is great to pair with any weight loss plans you may have because it work with controlling loose skin.
Is Ketosis the same as Autophagy?
Yes and no. When you enter into ketosis you will simultaneously enter into autophagy as well. The good thing about being in ketosis is that a lot of the time your eating pretty clean with not a lot of toxins so when your your body starts autophagy mode it will have less toxins from your diet to eat on and go directly to your old scars and loose skin. Basically autophagy will be able to work at top notch conditions because of your clean diet.
Autophagy is great but it isn’t for everyone….
Yes, autophagy is a great thing and I’m sure it will change my life as well as many other people but as with anything that has to do with your body, check with a specialist before doing any fasting of any kind. It could potentially be dangerous for you if you already have underlying issues. Also it takes a lot of will power to complete a water fast even if you do it for just a couple of hours. Not eating is HARD!
Also always do your research with tings like this, I don’t know everything but this was interesting enough for me to conduct my own research and learn as much as I could about this.
